Apple CarPlay now comes as part of software updates for newer Volvo models

A new over-the-air update has been released by Volvo for newer versions of its automobiles that utilize Android Automotive OS-based infotainment systems. This most recent upgrade includes a function that has been absent ever since the manufacturer abandoned its own software platform in favor of Google’s development.

Since their inception, Android Automotive-powered Volvo infotainment systems have lacked native Apple smartphone integration, and we made note of this when we first got to grips with the otherwise remarkable setup during our maiden drive of the all-electric Volvo C40 last year.

However, as of right now, iPhone users have the ability to bridge the gap and mirror their iOS devices on the Android system. This can be done, however, only through a wired connection using a USB cable; wireless CarPlay integration has not yet been confirmed.

Volvo has been releasing over-the-air upgrades since the beginning of 2021, and the brand estimates that its most recent version, released in April 2022, was successfully downloaded by nearly 200,000 new Volvo vehicles worldwide.

The new version is already available for download in the UK, so Volvo car owners using Android Automotive OS can activate CarPlay integration at any moment.
