In 2022, Apple TV Plus appears to be on a mission to show that it is more than just a Ted Lasso service. It’s been a great start to the year for the often overlooked streaming platform.
The Afterparty and Severance have impressed, and the original movie CODA just won Best Picture at the Oscars. Another must-watch series has just been added to Apple’s TV Plus service. There are no signs of slowing down.
The new Apple TV Plus drama series, Pachinko, has just premiered. They were inspired by the New York Times bestseller of the same name. The story follows a Korean family for four generations as they leave their homeland and immigrate to Japan in search of a more prosperous life. It was created by Soo Hugh and stars Yuh-Jung Youn, Lee Min-ho, Jin Ha, and Soji Arai as Pachinko.
In the past week, Apple TV Plus has released the first three episodes of the eight-episode drama series, and the show has already received positive reviews. Pachinko currently has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 98 percent, making it one of the best-reviewed films of the year. “Masterpiece” and “strong shout for most satisfying TV of the year so far” are just two of the many accolades heaped on the series by leading critics.
Viewer response to the first three episodes has also been positive. Pachinko’s audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes currently stands at 93 percent, while its IMDb rating is similarly impressive at 8.5 out of 10. (IMDb scores are generally harsher than RT. As the first season progresses, each episode has received higher ratings than the previous one, indicating that the show is only getting better.
As a result of its low $5 monthly fee, we’ve always included Apple TV Plus in our roundup of the best streaming services. But the service is now beginning to look like a genuine contender. In 2022, if Apple TV Plus continues to offer more high-quality content, we may have to reevaluate its position on this list.
