The all-new iOS 16 has added a new function that enables an eSIM to be exchanged between iPhones through Bluetooth while setting up cellular service. This new feature was announced during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2022, which was hosted by the tech giant Apple.

According to MacRumors, touching on “Set up eSIM” in the Settings app on an iPhone running iOS 16 brings up an option to transfer an eSIM and its associated phone number through Bluetooth.

To transfer an eSIM from another iPhone, Apple says the other phone must be nearby, unlocked, Bluetooth enabled, and running iOS 16 or later in order to be successful.

Bluetooth transfers of eSIMs provided by carriers that support the feature can only be completed with eSIMs issued by those that appear to support the capability in various countries, including the US and UK.

According to a report, carrier support for iOS 16 may be restricted at this time because it was only revealed a few days ago and is presently in beta.

A QR code issued by a carrier can still be used to activate an eSIM on an iPhone or iPad, which is something Apple has done in the past.

Users are able to activate a cellular plan from a carrier using a digital SIM known as an eSIM rather than having to insert a physical nano-SIM card into their device. The iPhone XS, which was released more recently, is the only iPhone model that supports a single eSIM, while all four versions of the iPhone 13 series support twin eSIMs.

It was announced earlier this week that the first public beta of iOS 16 would be made available in July to the general public.

According to the tech giant, the new eSIM transfer feature will be accessible to all users when Apple releases iOS 16 this autumn.
