A new rumour suggests that Apple’s forthcoming iPhone 14 Pro will include a larger screen, but don’t anticipate an under-display camera improvement for another four years.
DSCC’s Ross Young, a display expert and leaker, says that we should expect the iPhone’s Face ID and selfie camera notch to evolve over the next few years. Young says this.
According to Young, the screens of the two projected Pro variants for this year’s iPhone are expected to grow ever so slightly larger. This is due to the rumoured pill and punch-hole cutouts for the front sensors replacing the notch and the phone’s reduced bezels on the sides.
According to Young’s prediction, the iPhone 14 Pro will go from 6.06 to 6.12 inches in size, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max will go from 6.68 inches to 6.69 inches, if his prediction is right. Even if the increases are modest, they nonetheless represent progress. However, we expect Apple will refer to these phones as 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch in its marketing materials.
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max, on the other hand, are expected to retain their current, somewhat smaller sizes. According to Young, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Max will be the only devices that feature a slightly larger screen.
Here is Young’s alleged timeframe for Apple to remove the notch from the iPhone. He believes this takes into account the expense of purchasing under-display panels as well as when the technology will be good enough for Apple to use.
Based on this information, we may deduce that the first iPhones with an under-display camera will be released in 2026. There will be a pill and punch-hole camera configuration on all models by the time the iPhone 14 Pro is released next year.
According to Young, there will be a combination of the two, with the Face ID sensors hidden in the display but a visible notch for the selfie camera intact.
When it comes to these new Face ID/camera setups, Young claims the iPhone Pro models will get them first, followed by the normal models, before the Pro models go on to the next iteration. Rumors that the iPhone 14’s base model will retain the notch could be the beginning of a long-term trend.
