Adyen announced this week that customers will be able to use Apple’s Tap to Pay iPhone service later this year.
The company released the following statement:
Adyen, a leading global provider of financial technology, is collaborating with Apple to make Tap to Pay available to iPhone users in the United States later this year. With this solution, Adyen’s U.S. clients can accept contactless payments using their iPhones, without the need to purchase and manage any additional hardware or payment devices, such as a terminal. Lightspeed Commerce and NewStore are working with Adyen to bring the feature to a wider audience of businesses. After consulting with Adyen, NewStore will test the new feature with Vince, one of its customers.
All of Apple’s best iPhones, including the iPhone 13 and going back as far as the iPhone XS, can now be used to accept contactless payments without the need for additional hardware, making the phone itself a payment terminal for customers.
Lightspeed Commerce’s GM for payments and financial services, Jona Georgiou, described the provision as a “huge win for our U.S. customers” in a press release.
Adyen’s COO, Kamran Zaki, stated that Adyen’s customers would benefit from offering Tap to Pay on iPhones because it would make the checkout process even more efficient.
In February, Apple introduced Tap to Pay, which is now available in iOS 15. As of the time, Apple stated that “millions of businesses across the United States, from small businesses to large retailers, can use their iPhone to seamlessly and securely accept Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards, and other digital wallets through a simple tap.”
