When the sun went down in the early days of civilization, sundials could no longer be used to tell the time at night, so graduates candles were used instead. Photoluminescent objects and paint were discovered by Japan and China over 1000 years ago. The lume solution on some watch dials emits light for a short period of time by emitting phosphorescent light for a short duration.
It is the ability of materials to glow in the dark that is an example of phosphorescence. Lume is one of the most important components of many watches. With Lumibrite, an innovative new paint, light energy is captured from the sun and other light sources within a short amount of time so it can be stored for illumination in the dark. The luminescence level of Lumibrite gradually decreases over time as it emits light.
The most common luminous materials in watches today are Super-LumiNova, LumiNova, and LumiBrite. After the pigments in a watch are charged by a light source, they emit a glow for a few hours. People and the environment are completely safe from luminous paint because no toxic or radioactive materials are used.
What is Lume?
Luminescent phosphorescent solutions are used on watch dials to create a luminous glow. Reluming watches or replacing faded lume is done by some people. It used to be that lume on watches consisted primarily of radium; however, radium is radioactive, and many of the old radium compounds have been replaced by less bright but less toxic compounds.
Zinc sulfide and strontium aluminate are common phosphorescent pigments used in lume. It dates back to the 1930s when zinc sulfide was used in products related to safety. Zinc sulfide-based products, with their relatively low luminance, have largely been relegated to novelty status due to the development of strontium oxide aluminate with a luminance approximately 10 times greater. Exit signs, pathway markings, and other signs related to safety now use strontium oxide aluminate pigments.

Specification
- Band Material: Rubber
- Band size: Mens Standard
- Brand: Marathon Watch
- Band width: 20 millimeters
- Band Color: Black
- Dial Color: Black
- Department: Unisex-adult
With a strong focus on rugged army and survival watches, Marathon is a Swiss-made brand. A number of the brand’s timepieces meet the specifications of the United States Government for use by military personnel and are therefore approved for use by them. Hence, you can expect not only excellent quality of construction, but also a magnificent level of illumination. In order to maintain a constant glow for decades, the Marathon Tsar Watch is equipped with tritium tubes that do not need to be replaced. The hands, hour markers, and bezel of this watch feature the distinctive green color of the lume, while the twelve o’clock marker is orange in color.
Tsar watches are designed for use in maritime Search and Rescue missions, so they are water-resistant. This product has a 300-meter (1,000-foot) guarantee of resistance. Due to its high resistance, the Tsar is also an excellent mixed gas diving dive piece.
There is a positive surprise with this Marathon watch in that it has an oversized crown that is highly convenient to use. It is something you don’t often think about when dealing with watches. In spite of this, once you get used to handling a crown as large and smooth as this one, you start to appreciate it.
The watch works on a Swiss quartz caliber with a 3-jewel design and an end-of-life indicator, ensuring perfect accuracy and letting you know when your battery is running low.
Although, considering the watch’s price, the automatic caliber instead of the quartz movement would have been preferred. While it may not be the most beautiful piece out there, the Marathon Tsar delivers unparalleled quality and will light up the night.
Features
- Tritium gas tubes are used in the TSAR to ensure constant visibility in low light conditions. In addition, each hour marker is fitted with a gas tube, and the 12 hour bezel marker is fitted with MaraGlo. A tritium tube is a self-illuminating gas tube, containing an isotope of hydrogen. Since they work without an external light source like light-emitting diodes, they will not fade in brightness over time.
- In addition to its 30 ATM water resistance, the Marathon TSAR can be submerged to a depth of 300 meters (1000 feet). TSAR is a purpose-built watch made of surgical-grade stainless steel 316L. A synthetic sapphire is used for the TSAR’s glass instead of glass.
- To ensure high quality and accuracy in manufacturing, the TSAR is handmade in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland. This high torque quartz watch is powered by a Swiss-made, 3-jewel ETA F06 movement.

- Department: Male
- Manufacturer: Citizen

- Case Material: Stainless Steel
- Case Color: Silver-Tone
A sporty and tough dive watch with an emphasis on performance, the Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster BJ8050-08E is manufactured by Citizen. Due to this, only the large stainless steel bezel is visible on this case. At 12 o’clock is a luminous pip on a unidirectional rotating bezel. There are large black markers on the bezel. Besides the black rubber strap that is connected to the case, this watch is also designed with diving purposes in mind. Since the watch does not have lugs, even though it is a large case it fits smaller than its dimensions suggest. Additionally, crown guards protect the crown at 9 o’clock, which creates a more comfortable fit. There is a mineral crystal covering the case.
A Japanese Eco-Drive quartz movement powers the watch, so it does not require batteries and gets its energy from solar and ambient light. It is of course essential to have good water resistance in a dive watch, and this watch has an impressive 300 meters/1000 feet of water resistance. You can dive deep with this one without any problems.
This article is primarily about the dial. Aside from being extremely legible under regular conditions, this watch is also extremely legible in low light thanks to excellent lume. At 3 o’clock, there is a small window with a date displaying matte black dial. A generous amount of luminescence is applied to the dial’s large metal hour markers. It has large, broad hands with pointed tips. An orange frame surrounds the minute hand to add a touch of color.

When the subject of best lume watches is discussed, the Seiko Prospex Monster always comes up. Its sporty, rugged design is both quite versatile and works well on a wide variety of occasions. The design is quite sporty and rugged at the same time. As a matter of fact, the most striking aspect of this watch is the unidirectional rotating black steel bezel. They work almost as crown guards for the large crown at 4 o’clock, and one of the lugs looks almost like a shroud.
There is a beautiful blue dial with a sunburst finish, and the case measures a relatively large size. The strong and powerful lume on this watch provides excellent legibility, and this is also true in low-light conditions. With large applied hour markers framed in luminescent metal frames, a sword-shaped minutes hand, and an arrow-tip hour hand, the dial has a stylish appearance. The large markers and hands make it easier to read, but also means that a generous amount of lume has been applied for long-lasting illumination.

A redundant design element or a feature that isn’t used is not included in the design. There are two different lighting technologies used in this Traser piece – T25 tubes are used in the watch hands and at the 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock hour markers, while Super-LumiNova is used for all the hour numbers and indices.
Outdoor activities are made easier with the rugged design of the watch. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, stainless steel is used for the case, and NATO straps are used on the straps. In addition to its water resistance of 100m (330ft), you can expect it to last for long hours in the water. An automatic Swiss quartz movement powers both the three-hand set and the date function on the Traser P59. On the other hand, the white background helps separate the date from the background, even though the window is a bit small for instant date capture.
However, there is one aspect you should keep in mind when choosing a watch – its size. Watches with a diameter of 37mm are considered smaller than average. Therefore, if your wrists measure more than the average (7.3 inches), you may want to consider other options.

Specification
- Dial Color: Black
- Case Material: Stainless Steel
- Manufacturer: Citizen
- Case Color: Silver-Tone
- Department: Male
Citizen Promaster Nighthawk is an iconic pilot watch collection that has been produced for decades by the Japanese manufacturer. A proper pilot wearable should have a good level of luminosity, and Citizen has one of the best in this area. It has a proprietary compound for illumination, which differs from most manufacturers. This bluish-toned luminescent watch stands out among the typical green color luminescent watches. Most importantly, the lumen is extremely bright, especially in this model.
A sleek sliding pilot’s rule bezel complements the stylish black dial of the 42mm Nighthawk. It is operated by an extra crown located at 8 o’clock located on the inside of the bezel ring. There are several calculations that can be made with the bezel. It is still an excellent addition to a timepiece, even though 99.99% of pilots never use it.
Citizen watches have become almost synonymous with the Eco-Drive solar movement that complements its valuable features and masculine aesthetic. The rechargeable cell can hold energy for up to six months and can be charged by any light, natural or artificial. This watch has a single fault, which is its crystal. It is not the quality of mineral glass that makes the watch unsuitable for use, but the construction of the watch.
Due to the fact that sapphire is almost scratch-resistant, it wouldn’t be as much of an issue if it were sapphire instead of a mineral. Due to these reasons, you shouldn’t do much dragging the Citizen Nighthawk through severe conditions.

- The case made of stainless steel with a mineral dial window measuring 42 millimeters
- A collection of Promaster Nighthawks includes Blue Angels.

Exceptional, comfortable, and lovable, this watch is perfect for women. Digital dial screens are easy to read in a lighted area. In dim light, it is difficult to read digital numbers. An excellent self-illumination technology is provided by a company called Isobrite. As the manufacturer has remained relatively low profile, it caters to a narrow segment of buyers who wish to own a timepiece with the highest luminosity. There are few watches available in the world that have T100 tritium tubes, but the Isobrite Valor is one of them. Tubes with this lumin strength are four times more durable than typical T25s, and will last approximately 50 years.
An ion-plated carbon fiber case, a bezel with a unique design, and a rubber strap make this watch sporty. An orange 12-hour marker stands out among the black dial, which is accompanied by green tritium hour markers and watch hands. It is finally possible to produce an authentic tool watch that is suitable for pitch black lighting conditions. 11. Orient Mens Analogue Automatic Watch with Stainless Steel Strap RA-AA0003R19B, Bracelet
Specification
- Department: Men’s
- Manufacturer: Orient
- Case diameter: 42 millimeters
- Case Thickness: 13 millimeters
- Band Material: Stainless Steel
- Band width: 22 millimeters
- Band Color: Gray
- Dial color: Red
Under the right lighting, the burgundy red dial on the Orient Kamasu gives a pleasing hue to the watch. In spite of its attractive aesthetics, this magnificent timepiece offers far more than just aesthetic appeal. Orient watches are hard to resist due to their construction and features, as well as the fact that they’re dive watches. Firstly, LumiBrite luminescence is featured. After light exposure, the large hour markers and watch hands are bright and last up to 8 hours. They are coated with several layers of lume.
A second feature of the Kamasu is its F6922 automatic caliber, which has the capability to be halted and wound manually. There are few things better than a self-winding watch that hacks and winds by hand for a couple of hundred dollars. Additionally, the second’s hand will sweep across the dial, so you won’t have to worry about battery replacements.
As a final point, the construction is water resistant up to 200 metres (660 feet), so it can be used for a range of water sports, including recreational diving. All other typical diving piece features are also included, including a screw-down crown, one-way rotating bezel, and screw-in caseback.

How to choose the best Lume Watch?
In the world of luminous watches, there are thousands of models, but not all of them are good. Consequently, we weighed the following factors in order to bring you the best selection.
1. The overall quality of watches
It is important to consider the quality of the lume on luminous watches. A malfunctioning watch won’t allow you to take advantage of the feature to its full potential. Considering their overall quality was therefore an essential requirement. It was important to consider the construction, type of crystal, and movement of the watch.
2. Strong and long glow
When a luminous watch does not shine brightly enough and lasts only an hour or two, it is not luminous. A bright, long-lasting lume is what it needs. In this list, there are watches that satisfy both prerequisites.
3. Durability
You should consider the durability of the materials that were used to construct the watch. The most popular jewelry materials are mineral crystal and coated steel. These great illuminated timepieces feature Sapphire Crystal, which is scratch- and water-resistant, among other things.
4. Design
Choose watches with a traditional appearance if you want to be able to wear them with a variety of clothes. As a result of its traditional style, you can wear it with a variety of clothes in your closet.
5. Comfortability
As it is this substance that determines your level of relaxation, it is crucial to analyze the quality of the band or bracelet. The band should be exchangeable and flexible, and it should be made of comfortable material that does not irritate the skin. You must consider the amount of mass you carry regardless of which band you wear. It might seem as if you are not wearing a watch at all if the watch is extremely light.
6. Feedback from owners
The feedback we received from real wearers was also taken into consideration. A watch that causes the heart to beat faster can be painted in a more complete way the more diverse the viewpoints are.

It depends on the situation! Lume is an important criteria in the decision-making process for some people, while it is not necessarily important for others.
Watches are primarily bought and worn based on what type they are and what they are used for. The lume of sports watches is generally much more important than the lume of elegant dress watches. Sport watches are tools that are built for functionality and a purpose, so it’s not hard to see why they are called sports watches. The legibility of a tool watch is therefore a very important feature. Lume is not used in many elegant dress watches, however. Manufacturers (and customers) aren’t as concerned about this, despite the fact that it causes legibility problems in low-light conditions.
Good lume is probably something you need in a watch if you struggle to read the time and find legibility really important.
What Lume Is The Strongest? – History of lume in watches
Over the decades, the technology behind lume in watches has changed dramatically. Radioactive radium emits a constant and bright glow without having to be charged with light, since it glows very brightly and emits a constant and bright light. As time went on, watch manufacturers began using radium to incorporate lume into their watches. Radioactive substances are highly toxic when inhaled in large amounts, especially for long periods of time. Radium causes cancer and serious health issues when inhaled. As it turns out, “radium girls” applied radium to watch dials during the 1920s, and this was exactly the case. Radium was eventually banned because of its health-related issues.
Tritium was subsequently used by watch manufacturers instead. Similarly, this is a radioactive material, but nowhere near as dangerous as radium. However, due to its radioactive nature, most watch brands today no longer use tritium – with the exception of a few brands. For example, Victorinox uses tubes with tritium instead of directly applying the tritium to the dial to make it safer and more powerful.
It has been a long journey for watch brands in developing and innovating lume for their watches. Its proprietary superluminova is used by Rolex, while luminova is used by a number of other brands. Light must be used to charge this to make it glow; it is not radioactive.
How does best watch Lume work?
Currently, the best watch lume is usually made up of pigments that are based on photoluminescent materials. It is usually applied onto numerals, dials, and hands, and emits a green or blue glow after absorbing light and reemitting it. About seven hours are usually required for the Lume to glow.
It is essential to have an energy source and a “phosphor”, which is a substance that absorbs and re-emits light in order for phosphorescence to occur. The excitatory energy in radium paint comes from radiation emitted by radium particles in the paint, which does not require an external energy source.
To produce a specific color, zinc sulfide is combined with a “doping” metal to give a specific color to radium by itself. Radium by itself does not glow that bright, so it is combined with a phosphor in radioluminescent paint. The dial is also highly radioactive, so you should keep this in mind. In contrast, radium doesn’t decay in a short period of time, while phosphor deterioration will take years.
As opposed to radioluminescent pigments and paints containing radium, promethium, and tritium, Super-LumiNova contains no excitation agent. Strontium illuminate, a phosphor made by strontium, is used instead, which glows brilliantly initially, but diminishes after a few hours as it becomes charged.
What are the different colors of lume?
Your watch’s lume may differ in color, as you may have noticed. Green and blue are the most common colors. It comes from the fact that different types of luminescent material emit different colors. Using C3 Superluminova as an example, which glows green/yellow, it has a 100% relative brightness.
BGW9 emits blue light and is another common luminescence. There are lots of different colors available for lume, but the further away from blue or green, the weaker the luminosity will be.
Which is the best lume watch?
Lume on watches is treated differently by different brands. In addition to putting a lot of emphasis on functionality and performance, all of the brands on this list are known for their good lume. Strong lume is an attribute of some of the best brands, including Seiko, Victorinox, and Citizen. Omega, Rolex, Tudor, and Bell & Ross are among the more expensive and luxury alternatives.
Conclusion
There are several watch manufacturers who use bright and long-lasting luminescence to enhance the performance of their timepieces. “Marathon 41mm Diver’s Quartz” is our top pick which includes features like resistance to water pressure, ease of management, and durability. “SEIKO Men’s Automatic Analogue Watch” is our best overall product and includes features like stainless steel case, water-resistant and durable.
There is no doubt that Luminox and Seiko are the crowd’s favorites, both of which offer outstanding longevity and brightness, respectively. No worries, if you’re not a fan of either, as any timepiece from our list of the best luminous watches will work great at night.
