My first impression of this bag was its square shape when I saw it on Amazon.   Bags for dry goods and portage are usually not round.  The shapes are roundish and oblong.  That’s okay if they are packed into a boat hatch, but not if you want them to sit quietly on your board deck or hold the rest of your gear.

I was concerned about the quality because the price was so reasonable.  Upon scanning Amazon’s reviews, I decided to purchase. The bag’s appearance made me wonder when it arrived.  My inability to get an airtight seal after rolling down the top three times and closing it might have had something to do with the seams. Then it’s up to my master bathroom and the garden tub for a water test.

The bag floated when I tossed it into the tube.  There was probably no way my neighbors could figure out what was going on in my bathroom while I imitated the Maytag agitator.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that the bag was indeed watertight.

An external zippered pouch with a see-through window has droplets on the inside.  Despite looking waterproof, that zipper was clearly not. Although there wasn’t much, it was enough to warn you against putting anything important in that pocket unless it’s in a small dry pouch or bag.  It wasn’t enough to warrant returning the bag based on the results of the Maytag test.

When I examine the seam sealing job more closely, I begin to wonder if the bag will be durable in the long run. I don’t think it’s made well enough to withstand the rigors of an overnight SUP expedition.  It might be wise to seal the seams myself just to be safe.

The bag has just enough shadowy doubts in my mind to keep me from using it unless I put my belongings in small plastic or dry bags when I pack it. Regardless, it’s good practice.  It’s just in case. 

There is a lot of padding on the backpack harness, and it feels sturdy.  Despite its packed load, the bag is well equipped with adequate compression straps.  There is no way to fit a Nalgene or Hydroflask into the mesh water bottle pocket, however. A small Hydroflask bottle can fit in the pocket even when the bag is empty, but it is tight.

Additional attachment points could be provided by the backpack harness and the bag could be tucked under deck bungees if necessary. An inside liner is nice and sturdy, and a laptop sleeve is included.  The organization is otherwise nonexistent.

Given the previously mentioned workmanship issues, I may confine it to non-paddling usage when the assurance of complete dryness is not required. I like the shape of this bag, but with the previously mentioned workmanship issues, I might consider using it for other purposes. My other dry bag will protect everything inside the bag if I do use it around the water.
