Cook hints Apple is building a headset in the clearest way yet

Recently, Apple CEO Tim Cook provided the statement that comes closest to confirming that the company is in fact developing a headset.

In a recent interview with China Daily USA, Cook was asked what he believes are the most important requirements for augmented reality, or AR, to thrive in the consumer market.

As you may have guessed, I’m a huge fan of AR. And the most important thing about any technology, including AR, is to put humanity at the center of it, “he stated, echoing previous statements he’s made about how vital AR is to the company.

However, “I think we’re still in the early innings of how this technology will progress,” he continued, describing Apple’s current effort in the area, which has been centered on AR apps for the iPhone and iPad. In terms of the prospects we’ve seen in this sector, I couldn’t be more excited, and I hope you’ll keep an eye out and see what we’ve got to offer.”

AR, sometimes known as “mixed reality,” is a form of technology that overlays computer-generated graphics on top of real-world views, as opposed to virtual reality, which entirely submerges the observer into a computer-generated world.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has acknowledged that the company is working on something bigger than the iPhone. While the present apps can be useful for things like mapping a room or evaluating if a new piece of furniture might fit, it seems more plausible that Apple has been preparing the library and tools for developers to create apps for something like a headset.

Although it may slip into next year, Bloomberg reported in May that Apple recently presented its AR/VR headgear to Apple’s board and aims to reveal it by the end of the current year. Reports claim that the headset will go on sale in 2023.

Apple would be playing catch-up with a number of prominent tech companies, including Meta, which changed its name from Facebook last year to indicate its revised focus on immersing people in virtual worlds known as the “metaverse,” and Microsoft, which originally launched its Hololens AR glasses in 2016.
