The “poor” pre-order results for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus suggest that Apple’s positioning of the two new standard models may have failed, claims Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

According to Kuo’s most recent Medium post, pre-order results for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max were “neutral” and “excellent” compared to those for the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Max. A strong demand for the new high-end devices may be indicated by delivery wait times of more than four weeks. It is reportedly “unclear” whether Apple will increase shipment predictions for its Pro models, but there is an “increasing” likelihood that it will reduce orders for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, which now represent about forty-five percent of the shipments for the total lineup.

As it stands, Kuo claims that the pre-order results for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are poorer than those for the third-generation iPhone SE and the iPhone 13 mini. He mentioned that due to weak demand, Apple cancelled orders for the iPhone 13 mini and the third-generation iPhone SE in the first half of 2022.

Apple may cancel orders for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus as early as November if demand for the two standard models does not increase. Suppliers that do not directly benefit from Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro models will probably start to experience decreased sales in September and October.

As a model that essentially replaces the “mini” form factor in the most recent iPhone lineup, with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch display sizes now being the only options, Kuo said that “Apple’s product segmentation strategy for standard models fails this year.” For the iPhone 14 Plus, in particular, the “pre-order result is significantly lower than expected.”

Apple revealed all four of the iPhone 14 versions recently, and they have all been available for pre-order since September 9. On September 16, the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max are scheduled to be on sale. The iPhone 14 Plus will follow on Friday, October 7.
