iPhone 14 satellite connection hardware tests have been completed, but launching the device relies on partners

Ming-Chi Kuo, an Apple analyst, claims that the company is really developing satellite connectivity for the iPhone 14 and has already finished hardware testing for the feature before going into mass production.

The availability of satellite connectivity on Apple hardware, according to Kuo, hinges on “if Apple and operators can establish the economic model” before the iPhone 14 can enable satellite communications. Satellite hardware is also present in the iPhone 13, but connectivity was not made available since “the business model had not been negotiated.”

When the iPhone will offer satellite communication services is “impossible to forecast,” but it is anticipated to happen “eventually,” according to Kuo. Once it is introduced, which is expected to happen on the iPhone 14 or later, satellite connectivity will be used for emergency messaging and voice services once it is introduced. According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, iPhone owners will be able to send text messages to contacts in case of emergencies and report emergencies to authorities in places without cellular service by using satellite connectivity.

According to Kuo, the operator that Apple is most likely to cooperate with is Globalstar, despite rumors to the contrary. Tim Ferrar, a consultant in satellite communications, predicted on Friday that Apple and Globalstar would introduce a satellite communications capability for the iPhone 14.

Last week, T-Mobile and SpaceX unveiled a proposal to use “satellite-to-cellular” technology to offer smartphone access anywhere in the United States. The timing of the announcement may have been designed to beat Apple’s own satellite-related announcement. The service will likely not require an iPhone 14 when SpaceX and T-Mobile debut a beta version of it in 2023.
