According to Counterpoint Research, Apple is likely to have shipped over 2 million iPhones in India over the July-September period due to aggressive discounts and offers on iPhone 12 and iPhone models during the festive season.
Both IDC and CMR forecast record quarterly shipments for the iconic smartphone manufacturer, but their estimates fell well below 2 million units.
The third quarter of 2021 will likely be the first quarter in which Apple ships over 2 million mobile devices. There is strong traction for iPhone in India, as well as their aggressive marketing strategy,” Counterpoint Research Senior Research Analyst Prachir Singh told ET.
Apple began selling its products in September to prepare for online sales in October, Singh explained. This year Diwali was early, so vendors prepared goods 10-15 days in advance, resulting in high sales in September. August was quite good for Apple,” he said, adding that the company has been able to meet demand through its local manufacturing of older generation iPhones.
IDC’s Navkender Singh said ecommerce platforms are getting deals on iPhone 11 and iPhone 12.
Separately, CMR Research released a report claiming Apple shipped 1,53 million iPhones during the third quarter, up 150%. CMR analysts said that the company used its aspirational appeal to drive sales earlier than usual during the holiday season.
In Q3, the iPhone 12 had a 31% market share, followed by the iPhone 11 at 28%, the iPhone 12 mini at 18% and the iPhone SE (2020) at 14%. In September, the iPhone 13 dominated the market with 3% market share.
