According to MacRumors, 9to5Mac, and AppleInsider, Apple is planning to display ads in the App Store’s Today tab and on individual app pages. You’ll be able to see the new ad placements in the App Store’s search tab as well as in search results.
To distinguish between ads and other content, a small blue box with “Ad” inside it will appear under an app’s name in today’s tab’s larger card format. The “You Might Also Like” header on app pages will display ads suggesting similar apps to the one you’re currently viewing. Similar to how ads appear in the App Store search results, the ads on app pages will be colored blue. If 9to5Mac has its way, ad buyers will be unable to target specific apps with these advertisements; however, the ads will be relevant for the app in which they appear.
Apple told MacRumors, 9to5Mac, and AppleInsider that “Apple Search Ads provides opportunities for developers of all sizes to grow their business.” New ad placements are built on the same foundation as our other advertising offerings—they will only contain content from apps’ App Store product pages, and they will adhere to the same rigorous privacy standards. The new ads will be tested soon by the company. Attempts to reach Apple for comment were met with an unanswered silence.
